Choosing the Right Seal Material for Hydraulic Tube Assemblies

In hydraulic systems, a high-quality tube assembly isn’t just defined by precision-engineered metal tubes and fittings—selecting the right seal material is equally critical. The seal material directly influences leak prevention, resistance to temperature and pressure, and compatibility with chemicals, all of which are vital for system performance.

1. Nitrile Rubber (NBR)

NBR stands as the go-to choice for systems handling oil, water, and air. It performs reliably within a temperature range of -40°C to +100°C, offering strong cost-effectiveness. However, it’s not suitable for exposure to strong acids, alkalis, ketones, or esters. Common applications include hydraulic machinery and automotive systems.

2. Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM/Viton)

FKM excels in withstanding high temperatures, operating efficiently between -20°C and +200°C, and resists aggressive chemicals. This makes it a staple in industries such as engine manufacturing, chemical processing, and aerospace. Note that it’s not recommended for extremely low-temperature environments, as it tends to harden.

3. Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

EPDM seals are ideal for systems involving hot water, steam, and many cleaning chemicals. They function well across a temperature range of -50°C to +150°C but are incompatible with oil-based fluids. Typical uses include HVAC systems, sanitation equipment, and food-grade piping.

4. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

PTFE is chemically inert and capable of handling extreme temperatures, from -200°C to +260°C. While it lacks flexibility, it’s often used in combination with other materials to balance performance. It’s particularly favored in semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, and high-purity gas systems.

Selecting the appropriate seal material hinges on the application’s fluid type, temperature range, and environmental conditions. Making the right choice ensures the reliability and longevity of hydraulic tube assemblies.
